Australia's population

The new Prime Minister of Australia is against a large population growth. Read this article.

My observation
If Australia with its large size and a population of only 22 million complains about over-crowding, what is the situation in Singapore?

Anonymous said...: Singapore's situation is equivalent to the final stage cancer. It has spread so far and wide there is no way to control the growth anymore. Any therapy of Chemo or Radio would hurt the locals and foreigners alike. The Pro Alien Party did it to grow GDP that links to their bonus and they didn't care if the growth is cancerous or not! Anonymous said...: Its a matter of sustainability. Singapore is also suffering from resource shortage. Shortage of schools, MRT trains, hospital beds and HDB flats.
Singapore needs a sustainable population policy.

Anyway not every small country needs a large population. Lichenstein has a land size of 160square kilometers with 35K population compared to Singapore is 710 square km with 5M population; June 29, 2010 2:29 PM
Unknown said...: I sometimes feel that our leaders (either in Australia or Singapore) find that population growth is the easy way to future economic growth.

I personally feel that this path just leads to overcrowding, over-stressed population and eventually has to hit limits.

The much harder solution is to get the economic growth out of the existing population... or heaven forbid, have stagnant growth... Our resources would breath a big sigh of relief.

Australia is hitting limits on it's infrastructure and although externally it looks as though there is plenty of space for people, the major cities are becoming crowded, expensive and their infrastructure is crumbling. If Australia could grow it's second tier cities, it could grow substantially.; June 29, 2010 2:58 PM

I am very much against a high population like 5 million or more in Singapore.
It place too much stress on the small environment here. Transport, food, water, everything!
Today we read that PUB going to increase tremendously newWater plants. And desalination works.

All of us suffer we have to increasingly drink recycled longkang water, all because of xponential increase in population which is artificially created.

It is better to have higher quality of life than higher quantity of humans competing with each other in a small space like hours. The goverhment did a very very major mistake to increase our population artificially without giving the stakeholders (citizens) the chance to comment. Now it is too late, you cannot chase the aliens away, whether you vote or not vote for the ruling elites. very sad,

Gd Salary Govt = more unemployed PMET

More unemployed PMET = More Cheap Foreign workers.

Summary?

More Cheap Foreign Workers Yield high paying Govt Salary due to good GDP growth even though more Singaporeans PMET are unemployed.

The amount for Foreigner is more than $300. My question is why are PRs given the same subsidize. Singapore probably is the only country in the world that embrace PRs so preciously. 1. Foreign Engineers - More focus and more technical; rare skills as most locals very management-oriented and not hands-on. Both groups can be as hardworking and spent long hours in the workplace.
When skills are rare, salary gets higher!Locals may want to explore to learn reals skills than just talk and expect high pay. Locals also know the m.c. (medical certificate) tactics when some will conveniently be on M.c. when there is stock taking or audits, etc. HRs and boss have eyes too!

2. Foreign students
I mean the real students. Here to get better accreditation. These are the global brains and we need these committed groups to be interested in research and spent time. V committed. Local students too keen to make money and do the wrong work at the wrong time.

3. Foreign Help
My hourly local auntie charges me $12/hour for domestic help. Ask for $5 more for transport. Total cost approx $50 for 3-4hours; (actually leave within 2 hours as we did not see her when we came home early sometimes). Iron 7 shirts, do not work weekends, do not clean windows. Since I left my job with a Temasek owned company.. I have not paid income tax.( cannot avoid GST leh )
Do free lance work and recieve cash payments. In fact claim tax relief from as many fronts as possible.. maid levies, insurance premiums,elderly care.. etc

This way, you will not feel so "grum"..
