Tell it as it is. For us it is more like, as said before - there is nothing new that was not said before.
The breaking news part may be the $9,000 compensation to be paid to NS men as a show of appreciation to their sacrifices to the nation.
But why 9K and not 10K, just to round up the figure nicely. Even
1K per NS man our Govt wants to stinge, maybe befitting the labelling as the stingest nanny Govt in the world. Would the Govt be reminded that our sons serve NS on dirt cheap labour terms, our society has been groomed to talk in terms of $, as this Govt has been doing, so we are talking on the same wavelength as well, in order to keep up with inflation.
So we expect our NS sons to be treated better than that, at least in monetary terns.

I went to sleep early last night !
Many of us could have told the PM what he should have addressed last Sunday night years ago....

So what was news to me, when I glanced at the headlines early this morning-30th Aug ? "They" finally, felt the "disquiet", as one late JBJ mentined years ago.

One of my younger colleague, remarked that the PM spoke quite well ! LKY & GCT in their National Day Rallies also did very well, if you asked me.

My 2 cents worth.

Same old stuff: More foreigners coming in. Cannot be helped. They provide Singaporeans with more jobs. Singaporeans must accommodate them. More MRT lines will be built. Dunno when complete. More flats will be built. HDB will still be affordable. Wait 2.5-3 yrs for new flats. Singaporeans come first. $9K NS award for NSMen. YOG is a success. YOG was fantastic. Some stuff about education. After that fell asleep liao. Wife scolded me for wasting electricity.

BTW, the $9K NS Award is NON-CASH, paid into your CPF. Furthermore it is paid in tranches, according to "milestones". Dunno what milestones, but I suspect may be linked to occasions like ORD ($3K into your CPF), completing the first 3 ICTs (another $3K into CPF), completing another 3 ICTs (last $3K into CPF). Something like that.

On other websites already got disgusted reservists saying why not they pay govt $9K (either cash or CPF) and be excused from all reservist obligations.

For NS, we should solve the root cause of the problem by reducing NS maybe to 1.5 years or even less. Reduce the reservist obligations too. Anyway why not directly increase the pay of NSmen and NSF during their service rather than pay 9K?

Anyway do not forget the effect of inflation. 9K may be very little when you consider the effects of inflation.

I don't understand why people are so excited about this $9k. Judging from past experience, govt will take back this money (and maybe even much more), thru some other means.

The same also applies to people who got conned by the usual election sweeteners like HDB upgrade, Singapore Shares, whatsoever Rebates, whatsoever free money etc. Govt WILL take back this money somehow plus interest.

That is why everytime when govt say they want to give out freebies, I am very very worried!

Sadly this PM and the PAP will not be the ones capable of doing this.

bcos of pap's refusal to compete fairly politically they have become entrenched... & what is best for the PAP is not necessarily best for SG, there is too much at stake for all of them personally so they will fight to preserve the status quo.

things will have to get a lot more worse before change will come

S$9k may not be a lot to the old NS men, but it certainly means a lot to the new birds just going into ORD

Isn't this another form of vote buying strategy with the new NS boys? The old NS men may be difficult to buy over by a mere S$9k
